Darien, IL -

Between sundown June 10 and daybreak June 11, 13 cars and garages were burglarized in Darien, with property loss estimated at more than $5,000.

Nine reports came from the same area west of Cass Avenue and north of 75th Street, Darien police said.

The rash of burglaries has police reminding residents to secure their cars and garages to prevent thieves from making off with valuables.

“Right now we don’t have a lot of leads, but we suspect the cases are related, done by the same person or persons,” said Deputy Police Chief John Cooper.

Because some of the items reported stolen were large, suspects may have been driving a car, although they may also have been on foot during the course of the activity, Cooper said.

Most of the burglaries occurred between  8 p.m. June 10 and 6 a.m. June 11, in two specific areas — on Bayberry Lane, Exner Court and Summit Road near Birchwood Park, west of Cass Avenue; and an area east of Cass Avenue on 71st Street, according to police reports.

“In most cases access was gained by entering unlocked vehicles, and in a few cases in which suspects made it into garages, they may have gained access by using garage door openers left inside unlocked vehicles,” Cooper said.

In some cases, multiple cars were entered when parked at the same address, Cooper said.

Officers responding to an initial call began checking cars parked in the area and came across several vehicles where the doors had not been closed all the way.

“The criminals would go into a vehicle and then close the door far enough to turn the dome light off, but not close the door all the way to avoid making noise,” Cooper said.

Detectives typically share information with neighboring law enforcement agencies, but Cooper said he was not sure if other towns had experienced similar cases that evening.

Dawn Domrose, spokeswoman for the DuPage County sheriff’s office, said the department received no calls for burglaries in unincorporated Downers Grove Township areas near Darien that night.

In two separate cases, items valued at $1,264 were reported taken from garages and vehicles in the 1000 block of 71st Street, including lawn equipment and tools.

More than $3,600 worth of items was removed from cars and garages in the main area of burglary concentration west of Cass Avenue during the night, Cooper said.

Four reports of burglaries were reported in the 7300 block of Bayberry Lane and three in the 7300 and 7400 block of Summit Road.

Among items taken in those cases were stereo equipment, tools and — in one case — a victim’s bank account information, Cooper said.
