A Community Consolidated School District 181 task force charged with exploring options for implementation of daily physical education instruction at the middle schools is looking for community input.
The state of Illinois mandates daily delivery of physical education instruction in an effort to combat childhood obesity and promote healthy lifestyles. In the past decade, numerous studies have been conducted that link physical activity and academic achievement. The 15-member task force has been meeting for a month to study ways to deliver the mandated instruction in such a way that avoids a negative impact to other curriculum.
Middle school students currently take both core and elective courses in an eight-period day. The two middle schools offer physical education on a rotating schedule, with the classes meeting two out of every three days.
The task force is inviting participation through an online survey from Oct. 15 through 24 on the district’s Web site, www.d181.org. It takes about five minutes to complete.
The task force will provide an update on the process at the next school board meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Monroe School, 210 N. Madison St.
