Brookfield, IL -

With a zoo watchdog group planning a protest camp out, the Brookfield Zoo is set to host its own action day.

Since the death of 40-year-old African elephant Affie, In Defense of Animals has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate, believing she suffered from foot disease and/or arthritis caused by inadequate zoo conditions.

“Because of our concern with Affie’s death and Christy is the sole remaining elephant, it drew our attention,” IDA spokesperson Catherine Doyle said.

Supporters of the IDA will be out protesting off of First Avenue Saturday, June 20.

The Brookfield Zoo will be conducting an annual enrichment day with activities for zoo patrons to learn more about certain animals. Patrons are asked to come and support the zoo and see Christy in her new and improved outdoor yard.

Kim Smith, vice president of animal care, said children are invited to create treats for Christy and walk over to the exhibit to give her the food. Arts and crafts such as making elephant ears will also be available.

Celebrating life and learning about animals are done on a daily basis at the zoo, Smith said.

Zookeepers are committed to the animals and want to share their knowledge and expertise with patrons, she said.

“We did this because we wanted to show our commitment to our elephants and how much it matters,” Smith said. “We celebrate animals every day.”
