Riverside, IL -

Lindsay Hayes made a crucial decision when she entered high school.

Up until the age of 12, Hayes, now a Riverside Brookfield senior, competed in traveling softball. However, the year-long commitment came with an unwanted side effect.

“It was a great way to meet people but winning became a little too important,” she said. “I was starting to get burned out.”

Hayes’ journey to the 2009 Suburban Life Spring Girls MVP award took a unique detour.

5 things to know about Lindsay Hayes
1 BATTING AVERAGE
.425 this spring
2 ERA 0.80 this spring
3 FAVORITE PITCH TO HIT Fastball
4 COLLEGE CHOICE Illinois Wesleyan
5 OTHER SPORT Tennis

Hayes joined R-B’s junior varsity tennis team as a freshman. While using a hitting machine to work on softball, Hayes received assistance from her father, Ken, who played football and tennis at R-B and eventually played tennis at Tulane University and Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Hayes’ impact in the tennis program was felt immediately. As a freshman, she jumped into the No. 1 singles spot for the JV team. She moved up to varsity and played No. 2 singles the following year. Hayes spent the final two seasons in the top singles position.

She had discovered a perfect balance.

“I learned a lot about myself,” Hayes said. “Tennis helped me not get burned out with one sport. The hand-eye coordination I picked up also carried over into softball. I’m now more confident in myself, my abilities and my teammates.”

Hayes, who led R-B’s softball team to a sectional final Saturday, recently made another major decision to play softball at Illinois Wesleyan University next school year.

The determining factor came down to a career aspiration and a weekend trip to Bloomington in mid-January.

Hayes’ passion for becoming a labor and delivery nurse was influenced by her sister-in-law Sandee Hayes, who is currently in the profession. She took a train ride from the Chicago suburbs to IWU on Jan. 17 and was taken aback by the nursing facilities, the green scenic campus and especially the generosity of softball head coach Steve King.

At the end of the visit, the pitcher/outfielder’s train ride home was canceled, and it looked like she would need to say an extra day. But King volunteered to drive Hayes 37 miles to Pontiac, where she was picked up by friends.

“That really meant a lot,” said Hayes, who earned the 2009 Metro Suburban Conference softball MVP award. “Here is a coach that doesn’t even know me and he is going out of his way for me.”

Hayes had determined she was no longer interested in the University of Illinois because that particular Division I schedule would conflict with 12-hour nursing shifts during Hayes’ senior year of college. She narrowed her list down to the Titans, Bradley University and Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis., before eventually choosing to major in nursing and minor in Spanish at IWU.

“It was always my No. 1 school,” Hayes said. “But it was not an easy decision.”
