A demonstration of a new online tool available to Riverside homeowners only that can help them save money and improve the value and comfort of their homes takes place at 2 p.m. Monday, April 25, at the Riverside Library, 100 Burling Road.

MyHomeEQ.com provides home energy efficiency ratings and offers customized recommendations for energy saving improvements. Homeowners also can use the tool to connect with contractors and find energy efficiency rebates and other incentives.

As part of a special pilot program conducted by nonprofit CNT Energy, Riverside homeowners can use MyHomeEQ to connect with programs from Nicor Gas that offer discounted home energy evaluations and funding to help cover the cost of energy-saving home improvements.

The program offers a professional home energy evaluation for only $50. A professional energy auditor will evaluate homes and recommend the most effective energy-saving home improvements.

Also, $40 in free upgrades are included with the energy audit. This includes installation of faucet aerators, an efficient shower head and up to 10 free compact fluorescent light bulbs provided by Commonwealth Edison.

There also is an opportunity to qualify for funding from the Nicor Gas Energy Efficiency Program that covers 50 percent (up to $1,250) of the cost of making energy-saving home improvements recommended in the home energy evaluation.

Riverside homeowners can go to www.MyHomeEQ.com and enter their address to see recommended energy-efficiency improvements along with information about rebates and other incentives. They also can sign up for a home energy evaluation to get professional advice on which improvements will save the most energy and money.

MyHomeEQ also provides a home’s customized energy-efficiency rating, called the Energy Quotient, or EQ. Like mpgs tell drivers how much fuel a vehicle uses per mile, the Energy Quotient tells homeowners how much energy their homes use per square foot. A lower score means a more efficient home.

MyHomeEQ was developed by CNT Energy, an affiliate of the Center for Neighborhood Technology. It is currently available only to homeowners in Riverside, and is expected to become available to single-family homeowners throughout the Chicago region later in 2011.
