Local Girl Scouts are headed to Switzerland next summer, and are hoping a fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 17, will help them get there.
The six members of Girl Scout Troop 180, which has freshmen and sophomore students from Riverside Brookfield, Lyons Township and Lemont high schools, will spend eight days meeting their peers from around the world at the Girl Scout World Center at Adelboden, Switzerland. The trip is in celebration of the troop earning a Silver Award, said Girl Scout Troop Co-Leader Stacy Devereux.
“The girls earned the award for a project to raise awareness about global warming,” Devereux said. “They brainstormed for ideas about something they could do in the community, and after watching ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and an episode of Oprah about going green, the girls decided to do a project on global warming.”
The girls put on a presentation during Earth Week in April 2009 at Brook Park Elementary School, 1214 Raymond Ave., La Grange Park.
After the presentation, the girls held a shoe drive at the school.
“The girls found out that the gym shoes they wear get thrown out. Nike has a program that grinds up the shoes to build playground surfaces and running tracks with the shoes,” Devereux said.
“They collected 444 pairs of shoes.”
The troop is now at work on their Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.
“Each project is individual, but some of the projects will probably be environmental,” Devereux said.
