Riverside police arrested a known drug “mule” on Monday after a traffic stop and a fingerprint inquiry brought out an FBI hit notification.
Police stopped a vehicle for a traffic violation at Lionel and Delaplaine roads. The driver, 32-year-old Juan Salas of Maywood, was unable to produce any identification or a valid driver’s license. Salas was arrested and brought to the police facility for processing.
During a fingerprint inquiry, an FBI hit notification was sent stating that Salas was actually Juan A. Salas-Salazar with a different date of birth than he provided officers. Salas-Salazar currently has a no-bond nationwide arrest warrant issued by Adams County, Colorado for possession of a controlled substance.
When orginially arrested by Adams County Colorado Drug Task Force, Salas-Salazar was acting as a mule, transporting a large quantity of drugs, police said.
Salas-Salazar is currently being held in the Cook County Jail awaiting extradition hearing.
“This arrest is a prime example as to why law enforcement must wait for fingerprints to clear, not only from the Illinois database, but the FBI Nation Computer System known as NCIC (National Crime Information Center),” said Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel.
The fugitive warrant was issued in 2008 and Salas-Salazar had been using several fictitious names and dates of birth to avoid being caught for the past three years.
At the time of his arrest, Salas-Salazar was living at 2116 S. 3rd Ave., Maywood.
Charges from Riverside included driving while license was suspended and other traffic violations.
