When Abby Brennan was a young girl she used to dream about hands.

She’d visualize them washing away anything bad and instinctively knew their potential as powerful, healing tools.

During the first weekend in January that dream became a reality when Brennan, a former Riverside resident and graduate of Riverside Brookfield High School, opened Brennan Massage & Spa in Brookfield.

“I was always interested in body work and health. I always practiced yoga and I just sort of fell into massage therapy,” Brennan said. “Ever since I started massage school I knew I would have my own business.”

Brennan, who graduated in 2005 from the Chicago School of Massage Therapy, had scouted throughout most of the western suburbs for a location to set up shop when she took a drive through Brookfield one afternoon and found the perfect spot.

“I used to watch the Fourth of July parade sitting on the curb across the street growing up and I always loved this house and had completely forgotten about it,” Brennan said.

That 107-year-old house at 3700 Grand Blvd. was for sale and was eventually purchased by Brennan in July. It has since been renovated to include two spa rooms for massage work and Brennan has plans to expand the home over time.

About a year ago Brennan began going before the Village Board to get approval to open the spa.

“I advocated that we were trying to bring something classy, chic and urban but very comfortable to the neighborhood ... they were all for it,” Brennan said. “People are so excited that there is something like this here. We do offer the opportunity to rent the space out and hold an event here.”

Brookfield Assistant Village Manager Keith Sbiral said the location of Brennan’s business was already zoned for commercial use, but a village ordinance required some tweaking before Brennan could set up shop.

“There was a text change to a zoning ordinance to allow that use in the B3 district,” Sbiral said.

The board voted unanimously in March to approve the text change.

“(All the board members) were excited about the business opening,” Sbiral said.

Brennan said she is very thankful to her parents, siblings and husband for all their help with the business.
