Brookfield, IL -

Too few residents voted during election
I am not one to pass judgment, but I really feel the need to voice my opinion. Brookfield has a population of 19,000, and roughly 3,700 of that population turned up to vote on election Day. Do the math, people.

Are we living in a society that closes their eyes and are oblivious to what goes on around them? I thought I lived in a town that was different. I see I was sadly mistaken.

I’m ecstatic people feel so safe in their glass houses. But with talk of layoffs of police, fire and public works employees, the end result will be evident: a definite lack of public service. The nonvoters will have no one to blame but themselves.

I won’t be one of those detached people complaining about the imminent events that are soon to come to this ill-fated village. I voted for who I felt capable of turning Brookfield around.

The future of this community was left in the hands of voters. Too bad many of them did not feel compelled enough to cast their votes and make a difference.

Urge legislators not to support civil unions
House Bill 2234, a civil unions bill, is now under consideration in the Illinois legislature. When read carefully, this bill would redefine the word “spouse” and word that indicate a spousal relationship to read “partner in a civil union” in hundreds of provisions and regulations in Illinois.

This is an expansive bill calling for same-sex civil unions and marriage to be the same under the law. By their very nature, they are not the same.

This is not an attack on gays but a statement on the nature of marriage. Individuals don’t need to be married to enter into legal arrangements regarding HIPPA, power of attorney for health care or property.

It is not unjust for the state to protect marriage. Ask your Illinois state representative to vote “no” on HB 2234.
