The Brookfield Public Library turned into a crime scene investigation last Friday, fictionally speaking.
The library hosted its second annual murder mystery where patrons had to figure out “whodunit” by finding clues throughout the building. Christy Eyre, adult services librarian, said the event was a live-action day of the board game Clue. Staff members and patrons dressed up and were the suspects in the murder mystery of “Mr. Body.”
“I thought for some reason a live action Clue game would be fun,” Eyre said. “A different twist on the murder mystery party.”
Eyre said last year a murder mystery party was held after the adult summer reading program as a way to commemorate the course. The reading program had a mystery theme, which was the inspiration to the murder mystery party.
“We had so many people asking about it we decided to do it (again this year) for fun,” Eyre said.
Marty Blank, who works at the circulation desk, dressed as “Professor Plum.” He said he went all out on his costume to make the event as much fun as possible.
“I have my tweed jacket with the patches, the bow tie and the pipe, which cost me a pretty penny, and I don’t smoke,” Blank said.
Blank said he did some acting in college and it is fun to be able to play a different character. He said staff and patrons had no idea who the murderer is so they were finding out together.
This year’s event was more straightforward and patrons were able to explore much more of the library than the first murder mystery party, Blank said.
Eyre said 12 rooms in the library were set up with clues as to ‘whodunit’ and each suspect had a background with a motive to kill ‘Mr. Body’. Going room by room, participants were able to piece together who the murderer was and the motivation behind the fictional killing.
“It is a really fun event,” Blank said. “We hope to make a yearly thing of it.”
