Rev up your engines and get ready to ride over to Berwyn for the 21st Route 66 Car Show taking place Sept. 10 on Ogden Avenue between Oak Park and Ridgeland Avenues.
What started as a small car show in the parking lot of a local auto dealer has expanded into the complete shutdown of a section of Ogden Avenue, according to Benno Ceyer of Weimer Machine, the car show committee’s chair. Ceyer has been involved with the Berwyn Preservation Historic Route 66 Car Show Committee for 24 years and was involved with getting the show off the ground.
This year’s headliner will be Chris Karamesines, the Golden Greek, who is known as a drag racing legend to those in the know.
“He is a Top Fuel dragster,” Ceyer said. “I should say legendary, he was the first man to ever go over 200 mph in a dragster.”
And Karamesines is still racing at the age of 80.
“This guy is ... amazing,” Ceyer said.
Auto enthusiasts looking to enter their cars still have time to do so in advance for $30 until noon Friday, Sept. 9 and $40 the day of the show. To register, call the Berwyn Development Corporation at (708) 788-8100.
For those who are less interested in showing off their wheels and more interested in scoping them out, the event is free for spectators and offers live music and many food and commercial vendors.
“It’s a family-oriented event,” Ceyer said. “ Bring everybody, friends family, and get an appreciation for the cars that used to travel on historic Route 66. We get in about 550 cars before turning people away. It’s the largest one-day street show in the Chicagoland area and pretty much held that title since it’s inception.”
What makes this car show different from the rest? Well, the location of course. The show takes place right on Historic Route 66. Ogden Avenue was a part of that route before it was decommissioned in 1985.
