Hinsdale Central wins fourth straight title, LT’s Harazin take 3rd

Another complete team effort lifted Hinsdale Central’s girls tennis team to its fourth consecutive IHSA state title.

All four of the Red Devils state entries, two singles and two doubles, won at least three matches while compiling 32 points, four ahead of runner-up Deerfield.

Marika Cusick and Kristy Hamilton produced 10 of those points en route to fourth place in the doubles bracket. The tandem won its first five matches convincingly, the closest a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Benet’s Kelly Carney and Joyce Hanlon in the fourth round.

An epic battle ensued in the semifinals as all three sets went to tiebreaker. Cusick and Hamilton eventually conceded a 6-7 (2), 7-6 (8), 7-6 (5) defeat to Prairie Ridge’s Allison Murphy and Carolyn Huerth, who went on to win the title.

The Red Devil duo settled for fourth following a 6-3, 6-2 loss to Lake Forest’s Faith Bassiouny and Taya Zourbareva in the third-place match.

In a loaded field of singles standouts, Hinsdale Central teammates Hanna Mar (No. 1 seed) and Nida Hamilton (No. 2) both breezed through the first four rounds before losing in their quarterfinal matches.

Mar lost 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 to Morgan Park’s Jerricka Boone, and Hamilton dropped a 7-6 (4), 6-2 decision to Deerfield’s Julia Fellerhoff.

Anne Lombardi and Julia Quintero added three important victories to the Red Devils’ total.

LYONS TOWNSHIP
Tina Harazin’s third-place singles finish led Lyons Township to sixth place as a team with 19 points, one point behind fifth-place New Trier.

Five straight victories advanced Harazin to the semifinals of the singles bracket. A tough 7-5, 7-5 loss to Deerfield’s Julia Fellerhoff sent Harazin to the third-place match where she rallied to win 4-6, 6-1, (retired) over Stagg’s Melissa Kopinski.

LT’s Hadley Burke and Alexis Reisch contributed three victories in the doubles competition, while Madeline Barnabee and Stephanie Eastman won their opener.

GLENBARD WEST
Meredith Maltby’s two wins in singles play and Samantha Reedy and Molly Hennessy’s pair of victories in doubles led Glenbard West to 10 points and a four-way tie for 13th place. Olivia Schwartz and Madeline Morris also contributed a an opening-round win.

WHEATON WARRENVILLE SOUTH
Andrea Kerwin and Melanie Milling of Wheaton Warrenville South won their first three rounds while singles player Emma Li won two matches, giving the Tigers 10 points and a share of 13th place.

DOWNERS GROVE SOUTH
Downers Grove South’s Jenny Hois finished her high school career with three wins at state before falling 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 to eventual state runner-up FellerHoff of Deerfield.

Chelsea Lavin and Laura Pannozo won their first doubles match to add to the Mustangs’ eight-point total and tie for 17th place.

YORK
York received first-round wins from all four of its entries to tie with Downers South and seven other schools.

Amanda Budnik and Shelby Kost both won their opening singles matches. Kathryn Grimmer and Torrie Graham and Rachel Nelson and Kendra Mills earned victories in doubles play.

ST. CHARLES NORTH
Liselot Koenen’s two victories in singles action led St. Charles North to eight points and a share of 17th.

Brittany Plaszewski won a match in singles, while Jenna Bell and Alecia Natale scored a victory in doubles.
