Seven members of the Brookfield Police Department were honored Oct. 12 for their quick thinking after a Brookfield man was shot outside his apartment Sept. 8.
Officers Mike Kuruvella, Robert McGrath and David Kudla, as well as Lt. James Episcopo, Sgts. Mark Ryan and James Burdett and Detective Robert Palos were given recognition and certificates of achievement at the Oct. 12 Village Board meeting.
Each man was honored for a different duty performed, from making sure the scene was safe, to taking proactive first-aid measure to save the victim to working nonstop hours while conducting the investigation, which is still ongoing.
“They did an excellent job, and should be recognized,” said Police Chief Steven Stelter. “They did well in regard to this tense situation that happens very rarely in Brookfield.”
The 40-year-old man was shot multiple times in his back, left arm and leg, and chest. The shooting took place after an altercation outside his apartment in the 4500 block of Park Avenue with the man’s stepdaughter’s ex-boyfriend. The man and police have said the ex-boyfriend was not the shooter, but that the boy came to his home with other men.
The ex-boyfriend, a 15-year-old from Hodgkins, is charged with attempted-first degree murder and will go through the juvenile court system.
The man was released from the hospital Sept. 16. Police are still looking for two other suspects, including the shooter.
