When it’s time to schedule a routine mammogram, you should know some key facts about the hospital or healthcare facility performing the screening as well as its physicians and technology.

The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center is announcing its grand opening at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 9603 Woods Drive, Skokie. Sneak peek tours of the death camp exhibit area, the theater space and the exit lobby will begin at 10:50 a.m.

The Willowbrook Ballroom, 8900 S. Archer Ave., Willow Springs, will host a swing dancing evening with the Outcast Jazz Band at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22.

Eleven-year-old daughter Mikki can’t wait to see the hit Disney movie “High School Musical 3,” so her mom, Nancy Szatkowski, went to some dramatic lengths of her own to arrange a personal screening in Elmhurst for Mikki and other kids with special needs.

To publicize Szatkowski’s project to every family in the area, the co-chairs of the District 205 PTA’s Special Education Resource Group, Kristin Boxall and Dena Seidenfuss, have plastered the town with fliers and asked organizations such as Easter Seals in Villa Park to help spread the word.

Treading lightly on Mother Earth can extend to the flooring you select, thanks to a growing number of green options. Conscientious consumers can find bamboo grasses that act like hardwood, or carpeting sprouted from corn. And organizations that certify planet-friendly forestry practices track lumber from the spot it was harvested all the way to the retail shop.

Honoring U.S. military veterans on Nov. 11 each year is a tradition that dates to the end of World War I. The Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva also follows its own newer tradition: a veterans service dedicated to members, friends and family who have served their country in the military.

“The Unitarian Universalist community has long honored veterans,” said the Rev. Dr. Lindsay Bates, senior minister. “There are six UU chaplains currently on active duty in the military. On the weekend closest to Veterans Day each year, our church services focus on remembering and honoring all who have served. Many UU churches across the country do the same.”

 

Beds Plus, a group providing overnight shelter and assistance to the homeless of West Suburban Cook County, is looking for volunteers to serve four hour shifts once per month.
