SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE

An enterprising young man from the slums of Mumbai recounts his life – and all  its triumphs and tragedies  – in a series of flashbacks as he climbs the ladder on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.'' As he nears the top prize of 20 million rupees, he’s arrested and charged with cheating. How could a child of the slums possibly know all the answers? Just trust director Danny Boyle and all will not only become clear, it will become enlightening.

TWILIGHT

Tweener girls are all in a tizzy over this adaptation of the popular novels about a passive, handsome vampire (dreamboat du jour Robert Pattinson) and the mortal girl (Kristen Stewart) who falls for him. At first things are marvelous in their small enclave in the Great Northwest, but trouble soon arrives in the way of fangs and friends for the mismatched lovers. Catherine Hardwicke ("Thirteen'') directs.

BOLT

A canine TV star named Bolt (voiced by John Travolta) mistakenly believes he possesses superpowers when he hits the streets to rescue his human co-star (Miley Cyrus) in this animated comedy from the folks at Disney. Sounds dumb, I know, but it can’t possibly be any worse than "Madagascar 2.'' Can it?

ALSO OPENING

A CHRISTMAS TALE: A dysfunctional French family puts aside their petty grievances long enough to gather at their dying mother’s home for what might be her final Christmas. A terrific cast, a clever script and heavy doses of realism make this a gift that keeps on giving.

EDEN: A troubled married couple (Aidan Kelly and Eileen Walsh) reach a crossroads as they approach their 10th wedding anniversary in Eugene O'Brien’s adaptation of his acclaimed play.
