Two men face felony juvenile pimping charges after a sting by Downers Grove police investigators at a hotel in the village May 30.

Police arrested Bolingbrook residents Ivan Atilano, 22, of the 500 block of Lakewood Farmers Drive and Brandon Spain, 20, of the 100 block of Delmar Drive at 5 p.m. at the hotel. Spain was 19 years old at the time of the arrest.

Downers Grove Deputy Police Chief Jim Black said undercover officers became aware of an online posting for prostitution-related services and staged the bust.

While conducting their investigation at the hotel, Black said the officers learned the men were working in connection with a 16-year-old girl.

“The officer had made an agreement to meet the person based on a telephone call from this ad,” Black said. “When the officer got there, he conducted an investigation and prior to him actually meeting the girl, other officers noticed these two gentlemen hanging around the parking lot and kept an eye on them. During the course of the investigation, officers were given information leading them to believe these men were related to the case.”

Black said a 17-year-old girl also was involved in the case. He added officers seized $620 from Spain.

Atilano and Spain were each charged with a felony count of juvenile pimping, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and harboring a runaway. Police said Atilano, on whom police found brass knuckles, faces an additional charge of unlawful use of a weapon.

Both men were still in DuPage County Jail Tuesday, each on $150,000 bond. Spain’s next court date is Wednesday, and Atilano’s court date is Friday, July 11.

Black said the juvenile pimping is a class one felony and can result in four to 15 years in prison.

Black said the department’s undercover officers keep an eye out for suspicious ads on the Internet. He said the undercover officers make an effort to focus on locating ads specifically pertaining to or involving Downers Grove.

“It’s not against the law to run a true escort service if that’s all it is,” Black said. “A lot of these propositions hide under that auspice. It’s kind of hard to differentiate between the two. (Some ads) are very blunt about it, which is easier to lead us to them.”

Black said police could not disclose the Web site where the ad was found or the hotel where Atilano and Spain were arrested.
