Things at Community High School District 99 appear to be settling this week, with no new cases of confirmed H1N1 flu.

Student absentee rates remain normal.

The news comes in the wake of two students that were confirmed with swine flu at Downers Grove South High School last week. One of the students that was reported hospitalized has been released from hospital care.

District 99 spokeswoman Faith Behr said Tuesday, Oct. 20, there have been no additional cases of H1N1 flu reported, and student absentee rates for the flu remain at a normal rate.

“Student absentee numbers have actually been normal throughout this entire school year, even with the confirmed cases,” she said.

Behr was uncertain if the students with the confirmed cases have returned to class at this time.

David Hass, a spokesman for the DuPage County Health Department, said that only patients in the county that are hospitalized with the flu are being tested for H1N1, and all other cases of the “Type A” flu that could be  H1N1 are only being listed as possible cases at this point.

“Based on information from the DuPage County Health Department, schools throughout DuPage, including District 99, should expect more probable and confirmed cases among its students and staff for the next several days,” stated a news release from the district office Wednesday.

The district also reported there have been no major increases in the number of flu-related absentees at either Downers Grove high school

District 99 Superintendent Mark McDonald was out of the office Friday and was unavailable for comment, according his a receptionist in his office.

The district has continued to implement prevention methods in the schools, and is encouraging parents to do so at home, Behr said. Parents also should not send children to school if they are ill, she added.
