Accomplishments
• Six young adults received scholarships from the First United Methodist Church of Downers Grove Aug. 5. These scholarships are awarded annually to students attending college.
The Marge Lee Scholarship: Emily Hudson, a senior at Indiana University majoring in political science, and Andrea Simnick, a sophomore at the University of Illinois majoring in speech communication.
The Stewart Conger Scholarship: Kelly Hires, a junior at DePaul University majoring in theater arts, and Adam Tanguay, a sophomore at Northwestern University majoring in radio, television and film.
Mary Ann Brader Scholarship: Jennifer Schramm, a junior at Lewis University majoring in elementary education, and Lauren Dortwegt, a sophomore at Lipscomb University majoring in elementary education.
• Lauren Johnson, a graduate of Downers Grove South High School from Woodridge, has been awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Dominican University. The prestigious $12,000 Presidential Scholarship is awarded to students who rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class and have an ACT score of 28 or more. Lauren is majoring in education.
• Nina Dvorak of Lisle, was one of 11 Millikin University students to participate in a hands-on learning experience in South Africa. The group, which included three professors, spent over two weeks taking part in one or more classes in art, biology and global studies. The main theme of the trip was to examine the diversity of biology and culture in the “Rainbow Nation.”
The group began the trip with a safari in Kruger National Park and then traveled to Johannesburg to visit three HIV/AIDS family support and education projects. After visiting various parks and monuments, the trip concluded in Capetown where the group concentrated on recent history.
• Andrea Field of Naperville has been inducted into North Central College’s Phi Alpha Theta society. This international history honor society promotes the study of history by encouraging research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of ideas. It brings students, teachers and writers together for intellectual and social exchanges. To qualify for membership, students must have a 3.1 GPA in at least 12 credit hours of history and rank in the top 35 percent of their class.
• Bashirah Abd-Allah and Morgan Carey of Naperville and Ryanne Gassett of Lisle have been inducted into North Central College’s Sigma Tau Delta society. This international honor society in English encourages high achievement in the study of English language and literature. Students must have completed at least three semesters of college work with a minimum of two English courses taken beyond freshman English requirements. They must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 in English and rank in the top 35 percent of their class.
• Clay Fortino, Jonathan Miers, and Melina Siomos of Naperville and Adam Skolimowski of Bolingbrook have been inducted into North Central College’s Mu Kappa Tau society. This international honor society in marketing recognizes academic excellence and encourages high standards of achievements, commitment and ethics for students in the marketing discipline.
