For January, today’s projected high of near 60 degrees is pretty rare. According to the National Weather Service, skies will be sunny mostly through the morning before becoming cloudy.

“Near record-breaking warmth likely,” the NWS says.

The central Chicago area will see a high of 60 degrees, with upper 50s traveling through the northern suburbs.

Not only is it a beautiful day, it’s also a free day at the Brookfield Zoo.

Zoo spokeswoman Sondra Katzen said she expects there will be a lot of mothers with strollers.

“It will be interesting to see what we get today. We might even get some people playing hookey today, too,” Katzen said.

Nice weather is not only nice for humans. Katzen said there is a chance some of the African animals generally confined indoors in the winter months may have the chance to venture outside.

A couple of weeks ago, she said, there was a similar day with temperatures in the 50s.

“And the giraffes actually came out,” Katzen said.

Michelle Koss and her daughter, Sarah, came to the zoo because of the beautiful weather today.

“Well, it’s a beautiful day and I homeschool my daughter and she’s been working very hard and we decided to take a day off,” Koss said.

She said the unusually warm weather has been amazing.

“Global warming might finally be working in our favor,” Koss said.
