If you hear the warm and lyrical sound of a lone violin playing in Glen Ellyn, there's a good chance it's coming from 11 year-old Serena Harnack.
The Glen Ellyn violinist enjoys practicing her craft outside her home on the 500 block of North Park Blvd.
"It's kind of peaceful outside," Serena said. "Sometimes (neighbors) hear me and they come over."
With about eight years of violin lessons under her belt, drawing a crowd is not difficult for Serena. She has accumulated numerous awards for her abilities with the wooden instrument including first place in the Glen Ellyn/Wheaton Music Scholarship Contest, Youth Symphony of DuPage Concerto Competition and Musichorale Scholarship Competition. Serena won the three competitions all within the same week in February.
She aspires to be among the ranks of famous violinists such as Itzhak Perlman or Rachel Barton Pine, she said.
"(Violin) makes me really happy," said Serena, who said has never missed a day of practice. "If I'm sad or I'm not feeling well, it just really makes me happy. It kind of cures everything that's wrong."
