Bloomingdale, IL -

It’s Taste of Roselle weekend. For 27 years, this fundraiser has helped finance village improvements, including the Miracle Field for persons with disabilities, Odlum Dog Park, the Fire Department’s thermal imaging unit and park benches.

This year’s Taste is held from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, noon to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3. The event features non-stop musical entertainment, carnival rides, 50 craft vendors, the library’s paperback book sale, a bingo tent and free Roselle Lions Club hearing screenings from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday. For hungry attendees, the American Legion, the Sister Cities Commission and local restaurants will serve pizza, gyros, fondue, funnel cakes and ice cream. Together, the Roselle Chamber of Commerce and Lions Club will man the beer tent.

“The Taste is a Roselle tradition for the whole family,” said Kathie Fitzpatrick of Roselle.

Heading to Arlington Racecourse

Two years ago, at the Bloomingdale Walk-a-Dog-a-Thon fundraiser for Canine Companions for Independence —  a nonprofit organization that raises and trains assistance dogs for people in wheelchairs — I watched Amy Campos demonstrate how her assistance dog aids her daily life. As a child, Campos damaged her spinal cord by diving into a shallow pool of water.

This year’s Bloomingdale Walk-a-Dog-a-Thon will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Springfield Park, but Campos will not be performing the CCI demonstration. She died last year of complications from pneumonia.

This Saturday’s benefit day at Arlington Park Racecourse is the Amy Campos Memorial Benefit for CCI. Starting at noon, benefit ticket holders can enjoy a lunch buffet, open bar, air-conditioned reserved seating, a silent auction and a CCI assistance dog demonstration.

Go Green

Recycling is an easy way to “go green.” On Saturdays, Aug. 9 and 15, the DuPage County Wastewater Treatment Plant, 7900 S. Route 53, Woodridge, will accept latex paint for recycling. This is a win-win. You can recycle your unwanted paint and pick up a free gallon of paint. For information, call (630) 985-7400.

Recycle computers and office and data-center equipment on the first Saturday of the month at the Bloomingdale Township garage, 123 N. Rosedale Ave. For information, log onto www.Bloomingdaletownshiphighwaydept.com.

Antiques are the ultimate in recycling. On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Carol Stream Historical Society will host its 5th Annual Market Place at the Historic Farmhouse on Lies Road. To reserve a vendor booth, contact Barb O’Rahilly at (630) 665-8219.
