Munich’s Oktoberfest is the time to eat, drink and be merry. For Roselle’s American Legion Post 1084, 344 Maple Ave., October is also a time for joyous meals, though there’s a menu variation.
Fridays, Oct. 3, 10 and Nov. 14, will be fish fry nights at the Post. The Johnnie Matt Trio will provide live entertainment.
“It’s a fun evening among friends,” said Kathie Fitzpatrick of the Post’s Sons of the American Legion Northwest DuPage Squadron 1084. “We serve dinner between 6 and 8 p.m. Dancing continues until 9 p.m.”
Tickets are $10; children are $5. The Nov. 14 fish fry is a salute to veterans who can enjoy the all-you-can-eat buffet for $5. For information, call (630) 894-8524.
Spaghetti in October, too
From 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, Roselle Boy Scout Troops 194 and 408 will be serving plates of hot noodles smothered in marinara sauce. The spaghetti supper at the American Legion Hall will raise funds for participation in a Sea Base Hi Adventure program in Florida next summer. Tickets are $8, $6 for seniors and $5 for children 12 and younger. For tickets, call (630) 893-6647.
Scout parent Maryann Grygiel also mentioned the 10 a.m. until noon Safe Kids Buckle Up Automotive Safety Program to be held Saturday, Oct. 4, at Sunrise Chevrolet, 414 E. North Ave., Glendale Heights. Cub Scouts from more than 250 families are expected to attend and earn their safety patch. For information, call (630) 942-8300.
As for more spaghetti, the Bloomingdale Lions Club is hosting their bi-annual spaghetti supper from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the Bloomingdale Golf Club, 181 N. Glen Ellyn Road. Singer/restauranteur Tony Spavone will sing during supper. Tickets are $10 for adults; children younger than 8 are free. For information, e-mail lionkelly@att.net.
Voice of Democracy Contest
October is an ideal time to encourage your high school student to find their patriotic voice. The Bloomingdale VFW Post 7539 is sponsoring the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay Contest. This year’s topic is “Service and Sacrifice by America’s Veterans Benefit Today’s Youth.”
Students who live or attend high school in Bloomingdale, Medinah or Roselle can submit a three-minute audiotaped message before the Saturday, Nov. 1, deadline. Three local winners will split $500. There are additional prizes at the district, state and national competitions. Information appears on www.vfw.org or contact (630) 307-3634.
Also noteworthy is the VFW’s donations of a bench and solar-powered lighting on the American flag at St. Paul’s Church Cemetery on Lake Street. Thanks, VFW!
