Support the troops” isn’t a tag line, it’s a life goal for Bill Wolff of Bloomingdale’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7539. Over the past five years, Wolff has sent hundreds of care packages to military personnel overseas. He donates perishable items to the United Service Organizations at O’Hare. Every February, Wolff helps with the Glendale Heights Valentines for Vets program.

As a thank you, the village nominated Wolff as a Homefront Hero. A week ago, Illinois Lt. Governor Pat Quinn presented Wolff with one of 22 Chicago-area Homefront Hero Awards. The Vietnam vet responded, “I do these things for the soldiers, not for recognition.” Congratulations, Bill.

At 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, Wolff’s VFW Post will do something for military families. A free breakfast at Trinity Lutheran Church, 405 S. Rush St., Roselle, hopes to gather local military families. To attend, call (630) 258-8745.

A Bags Tournament

Also at noon Saturday, Sept. 27, the Bloomingdale-Roselle Rotary Club will host their first Bags Tournament. Ken Gross challenges teams to toss a beanbag into a hole in a wooden platform.

Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Roselle American Legion Hall, 344 E. Maple St.  The team fee is $50. First prize is $500; second prize is $250. Visit www.brrotary.org.

Walk-a-Dog-a-Thon supports the troops

At 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 28, Bloomingdale VFW Post 7539 will join the Bloomingdale Lions, Bloomingdale Westfield Middle School Leos, and Cub Scout Pack 457 in supporting the troops by walking dogs around the 1.1-mile nature trail at Springfield Park, 269 Springfield Drive, Bloomingdale.

Funds raised from Bloomingdale’s Third Annual Walk-a-Dog-a-Thon will be donated to Canine Companions for Independence, a nonprofit organization that raises and trains assistance dogs for people in wheelchairs including veterans.  “Then, there will be a demonstration on how a trained dog aids someone in a wheelchair. There are contests for the biggest/smallest dog, oldest/youngest dog, oldest/youngest dog walker. There’s even a raffle for a dog-motif quilt made by Jo Ellen Iden,”  said Jerry Markham of the Bloomingdale Lions Club.

To register, call (630) 661-7394.
