After years of planning, building and even lawsuits, the long-awaited Berwyn Gateway Plaza is nearing completion. The Vitamin Shoppe has announced a Feb. 9 opening date as the second business in the development. Construction to the site began in May 2011, costing the city about $4.5 million so far.
Aside from new shopping outlets, the Gateway is expected to bring increased sales tax revenue and jobs to the city. Buffalo Wild Wings is already in full-scale operation, and Chipotle Mexican Grill and Verizon Wireless have signed leases in the plaza. "Career opportunities available" signs are hung on The Vitamin Shoppe’s windows.
No date has been set for other business openings, but construction has benefited from a mild winter and is in the final stages. Two additional storefronts remain unleased in the plaza, which the city hopes to fill shortly.
