While schools throughout the western suburbs shut their doors following confirmed cases of swine flu, districts covering Downers Grove, Woodridge and Westmont remained largely unaffected. Village and school officials were still taking precautions as of Tuesday afternoon.
Lemont High School District 210
Lemont High School does not have any students or staff affected by swine flu as of Thursday.
When students came back to school from the weekend on Monday, May 4, they were greeted by containers of antibacterial handwipes that were set out by District 210 officials in every classroom.
Tony Hamilton, spokesman for the district, said officials have not seen an increase in the number of student absences, nor do students seem to overly be concerned about swine flu.
“The kids have a lot to worry about at the end of the year, and I think they’re choosing not to worry about swine flu,” Hamilton said. “They’re focusing on what they need to be focusing on, and that’s a good thing.”
Lemont High School officials are continuing to promote hygiene among students and staff by posting signs reminding people to wash their hands and installing hand sanitizers in every bathroom. The Illinois Department of Public Health has not recommended additional cleaning measures beyond what Lemont High School already performs on a regular basis.
Lemont-Bromberek Combined School District 113A
District 113A is also swine flu free.
Nurses at each of the District’s schools are calling families of students who are absent for illness. The nurses are also contacting staff members who are absent, and are participating in an ongoing district-wide planning related to the prevention of the virus in the schools.
The district is ensuring that school-based hygiene practices are supervised by the teachers and staff.
Village of lemont
Rose Yates, executive assistant for the village of Lemont, said village officials have been in contact with the Cook County Emergency Management Agency regarding swine flu.
The various Lemont taxing bodies are taking the necessary precautions to reduce the spread of the virus, including prevention measures being sent to local businesses, as well as parents of children in local schools. In addition, swine flu information has been placed on Lemont Community Television as well as the Web sites of the various taxing districts.
Basic hygiene information is available at Village Hall, 418 Main St., for customers.
