Three area teams, Lyons Township, Fenwick and Nazareth made the postseason. Those teams have a handful of players on the all-area football team each. Morton, Proviso West, Riverside Brookfield and St. Joseph fill out the team.
Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team went 2-2 at its own Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic to begin the season. The Bulldogs lost to Rich Central and Oak Park River Forest, but picked up wins over Kenwood and Brother Rice.
LA GRANGE – Morton’s boys basketball team didn’t have a Thanksgiving hangover. In fact, the Mustangs had quite the opposite over the weekend. Morton struggled in many facets of the game in a blowout loss against Fenwick in the season opener on Nov. 27, but won the next three games.
CICERO – Four returning starters is enough to bring high expectations for a basketball team, but Morton coach Tony Martinucci was most excited about the depth of his team. Martinucci said the Mustangs will play at least 10 players in their rotation this season and there isn’t much off a drop off within the bench.
BERWYN – There will be plenty of new faces around the Morton girls basketball team, but first-year coach Joe Maietta still believes the program is headed in the right direction. Maietta takes over for Craig Madzinski after assisting Madzinski for the past two years.
Monday was the first day girls basketball teams in the state could play their first games. Several teams from the area, including Nazareth, Fenwick, St. Joseph and Proviso West, are hoping to start strong and finish strong this season.
Lyons Township was the only team in the area to win a regional, but Nazareth and Riverside Brookfield both won over 20 matches this fall as part of winning seasons. All three teams had standout players. Players from those teams as well as Morton, Proviso West, St. Joseph and Fenwick comprise the 2013 Suburban Life Cook all-area girls volleyball team.
ROMEOVILLE – Morton’s stellar defense entered with 20 shutouts. Naperville Central had not been shut out all season. The Redhawks’ offense got the best of the match between two of the top programs in the state, winning 2-0 in a Class 3A soccer super sectional at Lewis University on Nov. 5.
