The holiday season brings with it festive family gatherings, wintry weather and high school basketball tournaments. LT and RB are headed to York for the Jack Tosh Holiday Classic while Nazareth, Fenwick, St. Joseph and Morton head to Proviso West.
Riverside Brookfield's girls basketball team will host Nazareth and Morton at its holiday tournament. Lyons Township will travel to a deep field at Wheaton North. St. Joe's and Proviso West head to Montini's loaded tournament.

BERWYN – Morton’s boys basketball team had a lot of known commodities entering this season. At this point in the season, it’s the other players who have stepped up to boost the Mustangs. Senior Antario Simon has proven to be a key second interior player to support standout junior forward Weisner Perez.
VILLA PARK – The Willowbrook girls basketball team just keeps winning. The Warriors made it 10 straight wins to start the season with a 63-37 win over visiting Morton on Tuesday. Willowbrook is now 4-0 in the West Suburban Gold.
Nazareth’s boys basketball team picked up an impressive win in its East Suburban Catholic Conference opener. The Roadrunners defeated Notre Dame 54-51 on Friday. Chris Swade had 16 points, and Evan McLaughlin and Kevin Connelly added 14 points and seven rebounds each.
The girls basketball season is already a few weeks old, but there’s plenty to look forward to. Here’s a list of some of the most anticipated girls basketball games still ahead for Lyons Township, Riverside Brookfield and other area teams.
Nazareth’s boys basketball team came up with a 61-49 win over Ridgewood on Friday with 19 points and six steals from Mike Brooks. Evan McLaughlin added eight points and eight rebounds. A day later Naz took down Taft 67-38 with 21 points from Chris Swade and 12 from John Mazur.
CICERO – The Morton wrestling team has just a few returnees from last year’s varsity lineup, but the Mustangs’ mix has turned in some good early results. Leading the way is Adrian Cardenas, a sectional qualifier last year at 170 pounds. The senior is back at that weight class and is arguably Morton’s best wrestler.
Three area teams, Lyons Township, Fenwick and Nazareth made the postseason. Those teams have a handful of players on the all-area football team each. Morton, Proviso West, Riverside Brookfield and St. Joseph fill out the team.
Riverside Brookfield’s boys basketball team went 2-2 at its own Bill VandeMerkt Thanksgiving Classic to begin the season. The Bulldogs lost to Rich Central and Oak Park River Forest, but picked up wins over Kenwood and Brother Rice.
LA GRANGE – Morton’s boys basketball team didn’t have a Thanksgiving hangover. In fact, the Mustangs had quite the opposite over the weekend. Morton struggled in many facets of the game in a blowout loss against Fenwick in the season opener on Nov. 27, but won the next three games.
CICERO – Four returning starters is enough to bring high expectations for a basketball team, but Morton coach Tony Martinucci was most excited about the depth of his team. Martinucci said the Mustangs will play at least 10 players in their rotation this season and there isn’t much off a drop off within the bench.
