Berwyn, IL -

A Justice man was crushed to death by his semi truck Thursday night while working under the vehicle, Berwyn police said Friday.

Michael D. Waychoff, 33, of the 7900 block of 86th Avenue, was pronounced dead on arrival at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after the semi truck’s tractor rolled over him while he was laying underneath it, Berwyn Police Chief William Kushner said Friday. Waychoff was working on the vehicle inside of Metro Garage, 6201 W. 22nd St., Berwyn, with the vehicle turned off, but still in gear.

“He was laying under the truck, under the front tandem listening for a leak from the air brakes,” Kushner said. “He asked somebody to start the truck.”

The tandem, where Waychoff was working, is located between the front and rear sets of wheels. Once turned on, the truck lurched forward, rolling over Waychoff.

Illinois State Police inspected the truck and found a disconnected air hose on axle No. 2, which is on the left side — right where Waychoff was looking for the air leak, Kushner said.
