Woman backs into car at train tracks, takes off
A woman in a sport utility vehicle decided not to cross the tracks when the gates came down at the train tracks at Oak Park and Stanley avenues and reversed her car into a work van before driving away, police said. The van driver reported the hit-and-run car accident, which occurred at about 9 a.m. Aug. 11.
Coins reported stolen in Aug. 11 in home burglary
A home was burglarized between 6:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. Aug. 11 in the 3800 block of Wisconsin Avenue.
Police said a front screen door lock was pried out and the front entrance door pried open. Two bedrooms were ransacked, according to reports. Police said a large amount of old coins were missing.
Senior robbed after handing over a couple of bucks
Police said a 96-year-old man parking his car in his garage was robbed at about 9:45 p.m. Aug. 11 in the 1400 block of Wisconsin Avenue. A man had approached the driver and told him he was out of gas and needed a couple of dollars.
Police said the senior took his wallet out of his rear pant pocket, removed a couple of dollars and went to hand the money to the man, according to police. The offender grabbed the wallet instead and ran away. The wallet contained about $100 in cash, a driver’s license, a social security card and a spare key for his garage and home, according to reports.
Gasoline reported stolen from minivan fuel tank
A man told police that he parked his Ford Ecoline Minivan on the 6500 block of 24th Street at 10:30 p.m. Aug. 10, and when he returned to the vehicle at 5:30 a.m. the following day, the fuel tank door was open and the gas cap was removed, according to reports. The man said gas had been stolen from the vehicle, police said.
Man charged with burglary after entering car
Police arrested and charged a man with one count of burglary after he broke into a parked car to search for money to buy beer.
William Lynch, 68, 3125 S. Oak Park Ave., Berwyn, entered a 2003 Hyundai Sonata in the 2500 block of Wesley Avenue. The owner of the car saw Lynch going through his personal belongings at about 6:45 p.m. Aug. 10, police said.
According to reports, Lynch told police he had drunk three beers at Tapp City bar, 6709 26th St., while waiting for someone. After running out of money and going outside into the alley, Lynch found the unlocked car and searched it for change, according to police.
Police discovered Lynch also was on parole and being charged with a felony.
Emergency call leads to paraphernalia arrest
Police arrested Ryan Peterson, 27, 7142 W. 32nd St., Berwyn, on a warrant from DuPage County for retail theft and charged him with possession of drug paraphernalia.
Peterson’s mother called 911 at noon Aug. 10 when she heard her son collapse in the bathroom and saw that he had passed out, according to reports.
Police arrived at their apartment and found an uncapped syringe, a lighter, a plastic baggie and a small piece of cotton rolled up in a ball on the vanity, according to reports. Police said they also found a tea spoon with a sticky residue and burn marks on the floor.
After Peterson was taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, he told police he had purchased heroin in Chicago.
Man charged with criminal damage after leaving bar
A man allegedly scratched up a white 2007 Cadillac Escalade with a key at about 2:30 a.m. Aug. 9 at a bar in the 6700 block of Ogden Avenue, according to reports.
Misael Renteria, 24, of Chicago was charged with criminal damage to property.
The man drove left the scene but police later pulled him over and arrested him on Oak Park Avenue in front of MacNeal Hospital.
