Hats, shirt stolen
Police are searching for two teenagers who stole two baseball hats and a T-shirt from a store at about 8:30 p.m. April 7 in the 6800 block of West 16th Street, police said.
An employee told police that one of the teenagers distracted him while the other grabbed the items. They then ran out of the store and into a older Dodge Caravan, police said. One of the teenagers was wearing a Boston Red Sox baseball hat. Detailed descriptions of the two were not available.
Man hit by pellet
A 49-year-old Berwyn man was hit in the thigh by a BB or pellet as he was walking his dog in the 2100 block of South Grove Avenue at about 11:15 a.m. April 8, police said.
The man showed police the home where he thought the shot had come from. Police said they searched the area, but neighbors told them the home had been vacant for more than a year. All entrances to the home were secure.
The victim refused medical treatment, police said.
Battery alleged
Adriana Castano, 28, of Chicago, was charged with domestic battery after a fight with a woman in the 1800 block of South Gunderson Avenue at about 3:15 p.m. April 8, police said.
The victim told police the two had been arguing when Castano punched her in the top of the head, police said. The two women began fighting and each sustained minor scratches in the incident, according to police.
Man faces alcohol charge
Everett R. Reid, 34, of Indiana, was charged with improper parking and illegal transportation of alcohol following a traffic stop at about 4:45 a.m. April 9, police said.
Police questioned Reid after an officer noticed his rental car parked in the middle of the 1600 block of North Gunderson Avenue, blocking all traffic. The officer saw a cup in the front seat next to Reid and asked him what was in the cup. Reid responded, “gin and juice.”
Reid was arrested, and the rental car was towed from the scene.
Gun shots reported
Several witnesses near the 1400 block of South Oak Park Avenue reported hearing six gun shots at about 1:30 a.m. April 10, police said. Officers responding to the area were unable to locate any victims or damaged property.
Paint balls damage cars
Nine vehicles and a stop sign were targets of a paint ball vandalism spree in various locations throughout Berwyn the night of April 9 and the morning of April 10, police said.
An officer first discovered the incident while on patrol in the 2700 block of Wesley Avenue. The officer saw several cars had been hit by what appeared to be pink paint balls. The officer drove around the area and continued to find additional vehicles.
In total, police found 28 paint ball marks on nine cars and a stop sign on the intersection of 27th Street and Kenilworth Avenue. Other areas included:
• 2700 block of Wesley Avenue, four cars;
• 2700 block of Clinton Avenue, one car;
• 2700 block of Grove Avenue, one car;
• 2600 block of Clinton Avenue, one car;
• 6400 block of 28th Street, one car; and
• Intersection of 27th Street and Euclid Avenue, one car.
Man charged in stabbing
Martin J. Kopke, 40, of the 6600 block of West 21st Street, Berwyn, faces two felony aggravated battery charges following a fight in his residence that ended when he stabbed a man in the stomach at about 6 a.m. April 10, police said.
Witnesses told police Kopke, the victim, and two other people had been drinking beer and smoking crack cocaine all night in Kopke’s residence when Kopke and a woman began to fight, police said. The victim said he attacked Kopke to prevent him from harming the woman, according to police. The two fought and, at some point, one of the men pulled a knife. The victim was stabbed in the stomach and taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, where he received an unknown number of stitches, police said.
Kopke was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery, causing great bodily harm, and one count of aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon.
Domestic battery alleged
Andrew Ortiz, 20, of the 2700 block of South Grove Avenue, Berwyn, was arrested on domestic battery charges for allegedly assaulting a woman at about 5 a.m. April 11, police said.
The victim told police the two had been arguing when he grabbed her, punched her and threw her to the ground, according to police reports. Once on the ground, Ortiz punched the woman in the back of the head and face, according to police. He then went to sleep in his room while the victim went to call police.
Car reported stolen
A gray 2006 Honda Accord was reported stolen from the 6800 block of Windsor Avenue between 10:30 a.m. April 11 and 12:30 a.m. April 12, police said.
DUI alleged
Juan E. Alvarez, 41, of the 2200 block of South Elmwood Avenue, Berwyn, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop near the intersection of Home Avenue and Cermak Road at about 4:30 a.m. April 13, police said.
An officer questioned Alvarez after he made three improper turns, police said. Alvarez later failed field sobriety tests and refused to take a breathalyzer, police said.
He was arrested and issued three citations for improper left turns, and two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, police added.
