Cicero, IL -

A Cicero police officer and firefighter were both injured while battling a fire that broke out in an apartment building on the 1900 block of South Cicero Avenue, according to town authorities.

Emergency crews were still on the scene two hours after the fire started at about 2:45 p.m. Fire fighters had the fire contained at about 3:45 p.m. The injured officer was the first to arrive on scene, and suffered smoke inhalation as he evacuated between 30 and 40 people from the mixed-use building containing at least 24 apartment units, authorities said. He was taken to Oak Park Hospital for further treatment, town spokesman Eric Kohn said.

The firefighter suffered a separated shoulder while fighting the blaze. One resident was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation.

Officials had called in Red Cross and the town’s Department of Housing to help displaced residents find shelter.

The fire was still under investigation as of 5 p.m. and officials had not released a cause for the fire.
