Seven area fire departments have been awarded U.S. Department of Homeland Security grants totaling $123,760. Those grants will benefit a total of 370 firefighters serving more than 257,000 residents.
The city of Berwyn was one of the lead proponents of this grant process and will use its share of the funding to purchase an automated accountability system, which will help wirelessly track firefighters during service calls.
Other recipients include Cicero, Stickney, North Riverside, Forest Park, River Forest, and Oak Park. It was not immediately known how much each town received.
“This system will keep firefighters safe and let them get the job done fast,” Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero said.
The grant also was facilitated by 3rd District U.S. Rep. Daniel Lipinski.
“Technology like this gives emergency personnel a critical edge when time is of the essence and lives are on the line,” Lipinski said in a news release. “I’m going to continue working to make sure local firefighters have the benefit of the latest technology.”
