Berwyn residents will have no problem showing their hometown pride this year, thanks to an array of collectibles being released in honor of the city’s centennial — including limited edition license plates.
In addition to the T-shirts, sweatshirts, pins and magnets being sold by the city, state and federal entities are jumping on board. The Berwyn branch of the U.S. Post Office is releasing a postal marking in honor of the city’s 100th birthday and the Illinois Secretary of State is offering a license plate themed around the Berwyn centennial celebration.
“I’m proud of being a Berwyn resident, and these things are just beautiful,” said centennial chairman Carl Reina, who is planning the city festivities, set for early June. “I’ve been a 58-year resident of Berwyn and it’s been good to us and I do love Berwyn. My attachment to it is to express my pride for the city, and I may even frame them after it’s over.”
A limited number of the license plates are being sold, and can be legally used from April 24 through June 22 — the last day of the five-day festival planned to celebrate the centennial. Reina said 300 sets of plates are available for $35, and about 60 have already been sold.
Reina said aside from being an expression of Berwyn pride, the license plates are also a unique collectible.
“The big thing is, it becomes a collector’s item after the day it stops,” Reina said. “All the collectors around the world will be pursuing these.”
In addition, the Berwyn branch of the U.S. Post Office will be marking all mail sent out of the city on its date of incorporation — June 6 — with a special marking in honor of the centennial. Berwyn postmaster William Ruona said he has requested permission from the U.S. Post Office to use a special cancellation, the postal marking printed over the stamp on a piece of mail to indicate that it has been used, on that day in recognition of the city’s 100th anniversary.
Ruona said after the mail has been marked by the Berwyn Post Office on June 6, it will be sent out as normal, or the sender can opt to save the mail with the unique cancellation as a collectible.
“The 100-year-celebration only comes around once for the City of Berwyn,” Ruona said. “We want to help recognize the city’s existence and do what we can to celebrate along with them.”
