Man charged in stabbing

Martin J. Kopke, 40, of the 6600 block of West 21st Street, Berwyn, faces two felony aggravated battery charges following a fight in his residence that ended when he stabbed a man in the stomach at about 6 a.m. April 10, police said.

Witnesses told police Kopke, the victim, and two other people had been drinking beer and smoking crack cocaine all night in Kopke’s residence when Kopke and a woman began to fight, police said.

The victim said he attacked Kopke to prevent him from harming the woman, according to police. The two fought and, at some point, one of the men pulled a knife. The victim was stabbed in the stomach and taken to MacNeal hospital in Berwyn, where he received an unknown number of stitches, police said.

Kopke was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated battery, causing great bodily harm, and one count of aggravated battery, assault with a deadly weapon.
