A Berwyn man is out on bond after security screeners allegedly found a loaded handgun in his checked baggage at O’Hare International Airport last week.
Rodolfo Duarte, 27, 6347 W. 37th St., was charged with boarding an aircraft with a weapon after he was stopped at about 7:15 p.m. Thursday at security checkpoint No. 10, Chicago police officer JoAnn Taylor said Monday.
Security found a .22-caliber handgun and two live rounds with the gun in Duarte’s carry-on bag, Taylor said.
Penny Mateck, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Sheriff’s office, said Duarte posted the required 10 percent of his $10,000 bail bond Friday. He had appeared in bond court on Friday, where his bond was set at $100,000.
Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, said Monday that Duarte was in Terminal 5, the international terminal, when stopped by airport security. Simonton said she didn’t know to which destination Duarte was planning to travel. She also was not sure if Duarte had a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card, or if he had a criminal history.
Berwyn Police Chief William Kushner said Duarte was headed for an AeroMexico flight when he was found with the silver makeshift handgun, with one of the rounds in the chamber. He said state law doesn't allow concealed weapons to be carried, as Duarte is alleged to have done.
“He put his carry-on bag on the X-ray, and that’s when the metal object was detected in his bag,” Simonton said.
Duarte could not be reached for comment Monday.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Duarte on Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Branch 50 courthouse of Cook County Circuit Court, 5555 W. Grand Ave., Chicago. The courthouse is reserved for felony preliminary hearings.
Taylor said she did not know where Duarte was traveling to, or whether he was traveling with anyone else. She also said she did not know whether the gun was homemade.
