Cicero, IL -

Public aid will resume for a Cicero nursing home after the federal agency administering Medicare and Medicaid services had threatened to cut off funding as a result of several clients suffering harm.

After its six-month period to comply with Medicare and Medicaid laws or lose public funding ended June 27, Alden Town Manor Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Cicero has corrected its deficiences, according to a June 23 inpection by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

Alden Management Services, the parent company of the Alden facility in Cicero, released a written statement regarding its compliance with the federal guidelines. “As always, we remain committed to providing a safe, secure environment for our residents,” the statement read.

Robert P. Daly, manager of the Chicago regional office of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, said terminating aid was not the aim.

“Our goal is to get the facility in compliance,” he said. “Otherwise, we likely would have to be faced with moving residents to other facilities.”

After receiving complaints about the facility, the state inspected Alden Town Manor Dec. 27, 2007 and found two people with bed sores. Also, the state found that the center did not have adequate programs in place to meet its clients’ social needs.

On May 2, the state noted an incident in which a resident fell on the floor, hit her head and broke her wrist. Another patient was found lying on a red pressure sore with no protective covering over it. Three other patients’ medical records showed unplanned, significant weight loss in a three- to six-month period, Daly said.

In response to the findings, the Medicare and Medicaid agency did not make payments for patients who were admitted to the facility between March 27 and June 23, the day the facility was found in compliance.

For the original findings, Alden also was fined a civil penalty of $300 per day from Dec. 27 to June 23.
