Berwyn, IL -

Some folks like tricked out cars, trucks, bikes or boats, but with this new set of wheels, these kids really can move.

And it’s not exactly the way one might think. But it all is thanks to a group of Cicero firefighters.

Discovering the need for specially designed wheelchairs that allow children to play basketball, members of the Cicero Fire Department collected about $1,300 this fall to buy one. They plan to donate it to the special-needs youth sports group “Sports and More” through the West Suburban Special Recreation Association at 11 a.m. Saturday at Proksa Park Activity Center, 3001 S. Wisconsin Ave., Berwyn.

“We got it in red. Luckily they come in red – we’re firemen,” said Cicero Fire Lt. Brian Kulaga, a 19-year member of the fire department, who spearheaded the collection drive.

Kulaga said Cicero firefighters played a wheelchair basketball game against members of the Cicero Flyers adult wheelchair basketball team this summer, and children had so much fun watching the game, a volunteer asked if the firefighters could play against the children’s group.

“We noticed some of the equipment was beat up,” he said.

Some firefighters took wheelchairs into local bike shops so new wheels could be added, but it spawned the idea of doing more for these children, he said. At first they planned to raise about $1,200 to buy two used wheelchairs, but later they opted to buy one new chair.

“We picked up a sport wheelchair,” Kulaga said. “It’s a little more rough and tumble.”

Specially designed wheels also allow for quick turning and pivoting capabilities. He said children who may be considering whether to play wheelchair basketball may use this wheelchair to try out the sport – before begging their parents to plunk down more than $1,000 for a chair.

It didn’t take long for firefighters to raise the cash.

“If you hear ‘we want to help handicapped kids,’ how can you say no?” Kulaga asked.
