Berwyn, IL -

Berwyn aldermen are considering whether to kick-in part of the cost of their city-provided health insurance in a move aimed at upping union members’ contributions to insurance.

City Clerk Tom Pavlik said Mayor Michael O’Connor plans to ask aldermen at the Tuesday Berwyn City Council meeting to talk about the proposal before a formal vote. O’Connor also plans to ask that the proposal be forwarded to the city’s legal department  for review, Pavlik said.

“They’re looking for some concessions from the union,” Pavlik said.

Contributions to health insurance are based on the type of insurance and on a sliding scale related to salary. Elected officials in Berwyn currently do not pay any portion of their health insurance costs, with the city funding 100 percent of the tab.

Aldermen are expected to discuss the health insurance contributions during their 7 p.m. City Council meeting Tuesday at City Hall, 6700 W. 26th St.

“It sends a strong message to the unions that even the elected officials are making it,” O’Connor said during the Committee of the Whole meeting Sept. 17. “I want a way to send a message to the unions that the elected officials are making some contribution.”

Some city employees work for one of several unions, including police, fire and public works.

“I think we should definitely do something if we’re asking the unions to do it,” said 4th Ward Alderman Michele Skryd.

Aldermen also declined to forward to Tuesday night’s City Council meeting any proposal that their salaries be increased during the ongoing budget crunch.

Aldermen receive $10,000 a year for serving their terms, while the mayor is paid $50,000 and receives an additional $10,000 for serving as the city’s liquor commissioner, Pavlik said. As clerk, Pavlik receives about $80,000 for serving as both city and township clerk and for his role as secretary of the township’s health district board. The treasurer is paid $10,000 a year.

Aldermen have not received a salary increase for about 15 years, Pavlik said.
