Writer does not support constitutional convention
ok jsh, bb I would like to address the senior citizens of Berwyn and everywhere regarding the Constitutional Convention that will be on the ballot Nov. 4.
The Illinois government wants you to only be interested in the term limits of elected officials, but there is a warning to this constitutional convention. If the referendum to hold a constitutional convention is approved, you will have your Social Security benefits taxed. Don’t fall for this.
As former governor Jim Edgar has said, if you want to repeal an official, then vote him out. Vote the people in who will do the job correctly. Use the process. Plus, if the referendum is passed, it will cost the taxpayers upward of $80 million, not a good idea in these bad economic times.
But, caution, seniors, if you do not want your Social Security benefits taxed, do not vote for this proposal.

Veterans should not vote for Obama next week
As Nov. 4 draws closer and we begin to think seriously about who we will be voting for, I want you to remember who is supporting Illinois veterans.
It was about two years ago that the Combined Veterans of Berwyn, with the full support of state Sen. Martin Sandoval, proposed a bill to provide additional funding for veterans service officers for the various veterans organizations in Illinois.
The bill was stalled in committee, and a representative group of veterans met with state Senate President Emil Jones and asked for his support in moving the bill from committee to the floor for a vote. At the time of this meeting Emil Jones, promised, with a handshake, to get the bill out of the committee and on the floor for a vote. Need we say, it did not happen.
We were all disappointed and decided to write to U.S. Sen. Barack Obama and request his help. We asked him to contract President Jones and urge him to support the bill and move it to the floor for a vote. He, Sen. Obama, refused to help, saying he could not interfere in local state politics. Remember, he refused to help Illinois veterans.
That was all well and good until just a few months ago, now that he is running for president, when Sen. Obama did call Illinois State Senate President Jones and request that he support and urge a positive vote for the governor’s “ethics” bill.
I guess when you are running for president of the United States, it makes a difference who and what you support. As Illinois veterans, we need to be aware of who is supporting us, who is in our corner and who you can rely on when the chips are down. You make the decision on who you want to be our next commander in chief.
