For a short time Oct. 28, it appeared as if the younger residents of Berwyn and Cicero had started their own revolution and taken over the mayor’s office.
It ended quickly when they had to return to class.
More than 20 students from the Riverside Drive site of The Children’s Center of Cicero/Berwyn took the seat from Berwyn Mayor Robert Lovero on their field trip to the Berwyn City Hall.
The Children’s Center is a nonprofit organization that serves Berwyn and Cicero families with children 6 weeks to 10 years old. The center is located inside Trinity Community Church, 7022 Riverside Drive, and is one of nine sites in Berwyn and Cicero.
The visit to Berwyn City Hall also included a trip to the Berwyn Fire Department where firefighter Brian Smith led the class on a tour of the fire station.
“We love what we do and being there when you need help,” Smith said.
Smith practiced the “stop, drop and roll” technique for the students in attendance and made sure each student knew to call 911 in case of an emergency.
“Visits like this help children to understand vital safety information,” said Children’s Center Director of Education Bonnie Buonicore. “After the visit, the children could say ‘call 911’ and ‘stop, drop and roll.’”
On their way out of City Hall back to the center, many children exclaimed how they wanted to be the city’s next firefighter or leader, but kept their answers short as to why.
“Because,” said many of the students.
