Spindle’s odd beauty an asset to city’s character

Berwyn, IL -

Artist David Shuler described his eight-car “Spindle” creation as having an odd beauty.

Those are simple but insightful words about the iconic sculpture that’s stood in Berywn’s Cermak Plaza for nearly two decades.

The “Spindle” was a star in the movie “Wayne’s World,” and the state has used the piece’s image in tourism brochures and literature.

At a time when the city of Berwyn is spending more than $130,000 on ad campaigns and billboards in Chicago hoping to attract potential home buyers, the “Spindle” — for free — has drawn many more visitors over the years, especially in the last several days since news broke that the piece is coming down.

Though probably more a tourist stop than a magnetic draw to live in our community, the piece’s “odd beauty” shows off our city’s greatest asset: Friendly acceptance.

A Walgreens — a store you can find on nearly every corner in nearly every Illinois town — is supposed to move to the where the “Spindle” now sits. The owners of Cermak Plaza are apparently at odds over what to do.

Here’s our suggestion: In upgrading the plaza — something that needs to be done — make sure to invest in what makes our city unique.
