Everyone who has anything to do with the Route 66 Classic Car Show on Ogden Avenue in Berwyn tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 8) will be a winner.
The event, sponsored by the Berwyn Development Corporation, will run from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Ogden Avenue in Berwyn between Oak Park and Ridgeland avenues. Registration for cars will be from 7 to 10 a.m., but Rosario Signorile, special events coordinator for the group, advised people interested in registering their cars to show up early. Judging begins at 10 a.m.
“This is one of our biggest events of the year and we only have a limited number of spaces available and we had a lot of cars pre-register,” Signorile said. “So if you want to register, come early.”
For those who enter there will be over 75 awards presented so there will be a lot of winners. The biggest prize, a $500 cash prize, will be awarded for Best Prewar (meaning World War II) Vehicle. The other awards include a Best of Show Modified prize, Best of Show Stock, Tremendous Truck, One Fine Deuce, Bitchin’ Bike and the Mayor’s Pick which will be chosen by Berwyn Mayor Michael O’Connor. A new award this year is the Pink Ribbon Award which will be awarded by a woman to a car registered by a woman. A donation to Breast Cancer Awareness will be made in the winner's name, according to Signorile who created the award in honor of his sister who has breast cancer.
In addition to the mayor there are many judges, most of them Berwyn residents or business owners who come from many different walks of life, according to Signorile, who said the event is not just for car owners but families as well.
“This event is definitely for families,” he said. “We have events for children, different activities throughout the day. It is truly a family event. We will have radio stations, a lot of vendors, a car that shoots out fire, a jumping castle for the kids and we'll be awarding T-shirts and prizes. We are trying to keep the whole day fun.
“This event draws about 500 cars a year and between 5,000 and 7,000 people come through,” Signorile explained. “It’s a lot of fun. But remember, if you’re registering a car, make sure to come early.”
