Remember the movies “Grease” and “American Graffiti?” Nothing says summer like classic cars cruising up and down the street.
Well summer continues throughout the month of August with the Tuesday Depot Cruise Nights scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 21 on Grove Avenue in Berwyn.
Sponsored by the Special Events Committee of the Berwyn Historic Depot District, associated with the Berwyn Development Corporation, the classic cars are on display on Grove Avenue from 32nd Street to the municipal parking lot during the cruise nights.
Featured cars for the evening will be Mopar, a division of Chrysler, on Aug. 21. All cars must have been made in 1980 or earlier to be displayed. During the cruise nights any and all classic cars are welcome to park in the depot area, which is from Windsor to Stanley to Oak Park to Home avenues in Berwyn.
“We have been getting really good turnouts, especially if the weather is good,” said Marybeth Eurek, operations manager for the Berwyn Development Corporation. “The last night in July it was a beautiful night and there were families with their kids and they were pushing strollers. It’s safe because we have the street blocked off. Some of the kids even decorated their bikes. It was really cute.”
The Berwyn Park District brings a wagon, according to Eurek, and sells snacks, but a variety of food is available at the many restaurants and shops located in the historic district.
Entertainment for the evenings is provided by Tony Adelflo, a disc jockey with Flashback 50s. A trophy is awarded to the “best” featured car every night, according to Eurek.
The summer will wrap up with the Route 66 Classic Car Show from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, on Ogden Avenue, which was the old Route 66 in Berwyn.
The Berwyn Development Corporation also sponsors an open market from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday through Sept. 8 in the Berwyn Historic Depot District, located south of the railroad tracks. A farmer from southern Illinois brings fresh produce to sell, according to Beverly Pastorek, a member of the corporation.
