Riverside, IL -

The Riverside Police Department will be enforcing seat belt usage during the Thanksgiving weekend.

The campaign, known as “Click-It or Ticket” will run through Nov. 29.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 25,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes across the country in 2008, and just over half of them — 12,865 people — were not wearing seat belts.

During the holidays, from Nov. 26 to Dec. 1, 2008, 1,389 people were killed across the country in motor vehicle crashes. Of the 231 crashes occurring at night, 67 percent of people were not wearing seat belts.

There is a $50 fee in Riverside if a person is found driving or riding in a car without wearing a seat belt.
