A Bensenville Police Department checkpoint this morning led to five motorists being charged with violations.
Police said 40 cars were pulled over during a two-hour span in the early morning hours near Grand Avenue and York Road. The names of individuals charged were not immediately released.
Police have conduced 20 safety checks so far this year at various locations around the village as a way to aid in the identification of motorists who may present a danger to others while on the road, Deputy Chief John Lustro said.
During checkpoints, motorists are directed into a area and asked to provide their drivers license and proof of insurance. Officers also check for occupant protection violations.
Motorists in compliance with all laws and vehicle-safety regulations are then guided back onto the roadway.
The minor inconvenience to the motoring public may help prevent a serious crash, Lustro said.
