BROCKTON, Mass. -

A Prime struck the lowest blow in the battle for gas prices on North Montello Street Wednesday,  lowering prices to $2.81 while just a couple blocks away, the newly-opened Prestige Gas station was offering $2.83. Both had lines well into the street.

Tuesday, the two stations created a new benchmark by offering gas at $2.87 and $2.85 a gallon.

The war seems focused on that area, while elsewhere, prices were all over the map Wednesday evening, as much as 78 cents higher less than a mile away.

Just up the street on the Avon line, Stop and Shop - which typically offers among the lowest prices as long as you have a Stop and Shop card - was up at $3.25.

And at the Central Street exit from Route 24 in Stoughton, the Mobil station was at $3.45, while across the street at the Shell station, prices were up at $3.49 (even including a six cent Wednesday discount).
