Years from now the record books will show that Batavia's boys track and field team scored 20 points and finished in a tie 12th place at Saturday's Class 3A state meet in Charleston.
What the record books won't show is the amazing fourth and final leg the Bulldogs' J.R. Kabba had to propel the 4 x 400-meter relay team to an improbable and impressive second place finish.
Taking the baton from third leg runner Erich Zeddies with the Bulldogs running in eighth place, Kabba proceeded to have one of the best 400-meter runs of his career, picking off eight runners on the final lap of the state meet to carry the Bulldogs to second place with a time of 3:18.90.
The all-senior lineup also included Andrew Thomas and Drew Dienslake on the first two legs.
Kabba's closing lap in the 4 x 400 may have been even more impressive, at least to the fans at Eastern Illinois University's' O'Brien Stadium, than the one he ran en route to a solo title in the open 400 race. In that race Kabba was among the leaders the whole way and edged out Homewood Flossmoor's Eric Oliver at the line for a winning time of 47.49 seconds.
Kabba was also eighth in the 100 dash with a time of 10.96.
