BATAVIA, IL -

A Batavia woman pleaded guilty Tuesday in Kane County Court to taking her neighbor’s cat.

Brenda Scharlau, 56, of the 100 block of North Harrison Street, Batavia, agreed with the Kane County State’s Attorney to a sentence of 12 months supervision, $200 in fines and $600 in restitution in exchange for a guilty plea to one count of theft.

According to Batavia police, Scharlau took her neighbor’s cat in the spring without permission and left it in an unincorporated part of Kane County. The cat never was found.

During the period of supervision, Scharlau must avoid additional criminal charges of any kind.

The $600 restitution payment represents the cost of a replacement cat, declawing and shots.

The state’s attorney’s office said it worked with the victim to determine an appropriate plea arrangement.
