Geneva, IL -

Last week Kane County Board found, by a slim majority, a rarity in the western suburbs: political support for video gambling.

An advisory committee recommended in a 2-1 vote not to ban the gaming machines. Now the Kane County Board will take up whether to permit video gambling in restaurants, bars and lodges — and if it does, break from the dozens of Illinois counties and towns that have outlawed them.

When state legislators legalized the machines this year to help pay for a $31 billion capital improvement plan, they gave local lawmakers the final say. Communities can ban the machines, but they would lose out on the money raised.

Kane Count’s Video Gaming Task Force heard from residents and business owners before makings its recommendation on Oct. 29.

Board member Jesse Vazquez, D-6th of Aurora, voted in favor of gaming, saying he did not want to hurt businesses by sending would-be customers away to towns that allow the machines.

Individuals should have the final verdict on video gambling’s merits, he said.

“If you dislike gambling, I would just say don’t go to those establishments,” said Vazquez, the task force’s chairman.

The issue will now go before the county board’s executive committee as early as its next meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 4. It would then go to the entire board.
