BATAVIA, IL -

The Sycamore defense was virtually helpless against Batavia running back JR Kabba.

The Bulldogs’ senior football standout obliterated the program rushing record with a night for the ages — 321 yards on 20 carries with four touchdowns and a two-point conversion.

The Bulldogs erupted for 26 unanswered points after Sycamore took its only lead of the Western Sun Conference game on its opening second-half possession for a 47-22 victory in Batavia Friday night.

Batavia won its fourth straight game and can guarantee a playoff berth with a win against DeKalb next week.

Kabba left the game early in the fourth quarter with an injury and was not available for comments afterwards, but his teammates and head coach spoke volumes about his historic night.

“I knew JR would do special things with the ball and get in the end zone,” Batavia left tackle Phil Livingston said.

“That’s definitely a school record,” Batavia coach Mike Gaspari said. “Our offensive line never stopped performing even when our skill players made mistakes.”

Tyler Lindquist gave Batavia the lead for good on a 30-yard connection from quarterback Jordan Coffey midway through the third.

Batavia stopped the Spartans’ next drive on a fourth-and-six play from its own 23-yard line.

Two plays later, Kabba, who had scoring runs of 11, 70 and 74 yards in the first half, swept around right end and cut back against the grain for his third 70-yard-plus score of the night to give Batavia a 35-22 lead.

Batavia (5-2, 4-1) closed out the Spartans (3-4, 1-4) with Erich Zeddies’ eight-yard reception from Coffey, and a four-yard plunge by fullback Evan Olexa.

“We just couldn’t get any stops,” Sycamore coach Joe Ryan said.
